The authentication method the node's configured authn rules ask of a caller claiming user from remoteAddress, or null if no rule matches and the caller is to be rejected.

Pass a null remoteAddress where the caller's address isn't known: a rule naming an address can't then match, so a caller who reaches one is rejected rather than matched against a looser rule further down.
